About Us

Welcome to Excelsior

Nestled on the shores of Lake Minnetonka and just 20 minutes from downtown Minneapolis, the City of Excelsior offers a charming small-town atmosphere in a one-square-mile community of 2,300 residents. Excelsior is a unique blend of old and new, where antique shops, specialty boutiques, restaurants, a historic theater, and a cozy bed and breakfast invite you to explore and stay awhile.

A City Rich in History

Founded in 1853 by settlers from New York, Excelsior has long served as the cultural and commercial heart of the South Lake Minnetonka area. The city’s historic downtown and small-town charm set it apart from other suburban communities. Visitors can enjoy a ride aboard the restored steamboat Minnehaha, which offers round trips between Excelsior and Wayzata in the summer. You can also step back in time with a visit to the Excelsior streetcar and local museum.

Recreation and the Outdoors

Excelsior is a hub for outdoor enthusiasts. The popular Lake Minnetonka Regional Trail runs through downtown, offering scenic paths for biking and walking. At the north end of town, The Commons Park features a swimming beach, tennis courts, playgrounds, baseball fields, and picnic areas—making it the perfect destination for family fun and relaxation.

Events & Community Spirit

Excelsior hosts a variety of community events each year, many organized by the Excelsior-Lake Minnetonka Chamber of Commerce. Thousands of visitors attend beloved annual traditions such as Art in the Park, Fourth of July celebrations, and Apple Day.

Excelsior is a vibrant, welcoming community with deep roots and a bright future. Whether you come to shop, explore, relax, or celebrate—Excelsior invites you to experience all it has to offer.
